For us, the added advantage of working through the gardens gently, it ensure we have activities all winter long for our volunteers in between a brew and cake. Many have quiet and isolated lives outside of The Wonky Garden, it gives them purpose and also company and we like that, a lot.

Whilst slash-and-burn can be cathartic – and the take-back-control school of sward-sovereignty remains popular with garden-gammons, I'm all for allowing things to remain. You only have to imagine what it would look like had it been cleared to see how effective this approach is… it may be uniformly sepia, in contrast the blooming months, but the beautiful forms are still there and a little frost elevates it all. Add a little low-sun backlight and we're all momentarily Midas. Crystallofolia has been coined – and presumably 'crystalloflora' by inference. A whole new garden for nothing but acquiescence.

I agree. Softly, softly. The birds are so busy seeking out bugs etc. In a week like this the plant skeletons are frosted and catching the low light. Winter beauty.
